St. John's Competes in Farnsworth/Princeton Invitational

QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's men's tennis team wrapped up play on Sunday at the Farnsworth Invitational, hosted by Princeton University. Several members of the team competed in the invitational and Red Storm junior Stefan Bojic led the way, winning the invitational's "C" singles bracket.
Bojic opened the invitational by defeating Fairleigh Dickinson's Peter Skvarka 3-6, 7-6(2), 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals. The junior transfer added back-to-back wins on Saturday over two members of the Princeton squad to advance to the finals of the "C" bracket to face yet another Princeton opponent. Bojic made quick work of the Tigers' Coleman Crutchfield, defeating him 6-2, 6-3 in the bracket's championship match.
St. John's Matty Najfeld also performed well in the fall-season opener, winning the "E" singles bracket. Najfeld defeated Yale's Tommy Ratchford 6-1, 6-2 and followed with a win over top-ranked Guanhua Chen 7-6(0), 6-4 from Penn State to advance to the bracket finals. Najfeld defeated Columbia's Alex Lee to win the invitational's "E" bracket.
After dropping his opener to Penn State's Russell Bader, sophomore Mike Lampa rebounded to win his next three matches and take the "B" consolation bracket. Lampa defeated second-ranked Erik Blemenkranz 6-4, 6-0 and then teammate Pavel Cerny to move on to the consolation bracket final. In the final the New Jersey native ousted top-seeded Jason Magnes from the University of Pennsylvania 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 to win the consolation "B" bracket.
Junior Milo Hauk grinded out a tough win over Princeton's Matt Spindler in the "A" singles bracket to open the fall season. Hauk won the match 6-7(3), 7-6(6), 6-3, but was beaten by Penn's Eugen Brazdil 7-6(0), 6-7(2), 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the "A" bracket.
The men's tennis team returns to action when it competes in the annual USTA Invitational in Flushing, N.Y. The invite will be held from Friday, Sept. 24 - Sunday, Sept. 26.
