QUEENS, N.Y. - After an impressive fall season that featured two team titles and one individual championship, the St. John's men's golf team looks to remain hot on the links this spring with events in the South, on the West Coast and in the Caribbean.
During the 2010 fall season, the Red Storm took home team championships in the Hartford Hawk Invitational (Sept. 27-28) and the MacDonald Cup (Oct. 2-3). St. John's also took second in the Big 5 Championship (Oct. 9-10) and third in the Mission Inn Intercollegiate (Oct. 22-24). Fifth-year senior captain Evan Beirne won the Mission Inn Intercollegiate after shooting a 6-under 210, marking STJ's first individual title since 2008. Beirne shined throughout the fall with top-5 finishes in the Hartford Hawk Invitational (t-2), the MacDonald Cup (t-2) and the Big 5 Championshp (t-5).
St. John's opens its spring season with the BIG EAST Match Play held Feb. 11-12 at TPC Tampa Bay in Tampa, Fla. The following week, the Red Storm will make the first of two trips to the West to compete in the Snowman Invitational from Feb. 20-21. Washington State will host the tournament on the Cattail Course at Whirlwind Golf Club in Chandler, Ariz.
Two more warm-weather spots will serve as the sites for the Red Storm's two March tournaments. From March 7-9, St. John's will host the Caribbean Classic at Costa Caribe Resort in Ponce, Puerto Rico, marking the fourth straight year that STJ will play in the U.S. territory appurtenant. The Red Storm then heads to Irvine, Calif., for the Folino Invitational from March 21-22. Cal State Fullerton is hosting the event at Oak Valley Country Club.
St. John's final non-conference tournament is the River Landing Intercollegiate, hosted by UNC-Wilmington from April 8-9 at River Landing Country Club in Wallace, N.C.
The 2011 BIG EAST Championship will be held from April 17-19 at Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club in Palm Harbor, Fla.
The Red Storm hopes strong performances in its spring events will earn the team a spot in the NCAA East Regional, which will be held from May 19-21 at Peter Dye River Course in Blacksburg, Va. The NCAA Championships will be held from May 31-June 5 at Karsten Creek Golf Course in Stillwater, Okla.
Beirne, who posted a 70.42 round average over five events, was not the only Red Storm men's golfer who enjoyed standout play in the fall season. Senior Mark Costanza (1-under 139, t-4) and sophomore Peter Ballo (2-under 142, t-7) were major parts of St. John's MacDonald Cup victory at The Course at Yale. Freshman Ryan McCormick enjoyed a strong start to his St. John's career, posting top-10 finishes in the Hartford Hawk Invitational (t-9) and the Mission Inn Intercollegiate (t-10). Sophomore transfer Pat Wilson was a solid team contributor in his first semester with the Red Storm and played a key role in STJ's victory in the Hartford Hawk Invitational, shooting 3-over 147 and taking eighth place. Sophomore Jeremy Quinn enjoyed a career-best performance while competing as an individual in the MacDonald Cup. Quinn tied for the third-lowest STJ round all-time with a first-round, 6-under 64 at The Course at Yale and tied for fifth at even-par 140.
