QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's golf team will compete in four East Coast spring golf tournaments in preparation for the 2011 BIG EAST Championship in Innisbrook, Fla. St. John's is looking to build off a strong fall season that featured top-5 team finishes in the Towson Women's Invitational (third place), Rutgers Invitational (fourth place) and Sacred Heart Fall Classic (third place).
The Red Storm opens its spring schedule during spring break with Eastern Kentucky's El Diablo Intercollegiate at El Diablo Golf Club from March 10-12 in Citrus Springs, Fla. St. John's was slated to start its 2010 spring slate in the EKU El Diablo Intercollegiate, but thunderstorms canceled the 72-hole event.
St. John's next heads to Williamsburg, Va., for the C&F Bank Intercollegiate, hosted by William & Mary from March 19-20 at Ford's Colony Country Club. The Red Storm took fourth place in last year's tournament with a 625 (+49), its best team score of the spring.
On March 27, St. John's will go head-to-head against local rival Columbia when the two schools square off for a duel match at Spook Rock Golf Course in Suffern, N.Y.
The Red Storm plays in another familiar tournament two weeks later in Georgetown's Hoya Invitational from April 4-5 at the Members Club at Four Streams. St. John's will compete in the event for a sixth consecutive year. Last year in Beallsville, Md., St. John's took 11th.
STJ's final regular non-conference event is the Brown Invitational, held April 10-11 at Rhode Island Country Club in Barrington, R.I.
The 2011 BIG EAST Championships will be held April 16-19 at Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club in Palm Harbor, Fla. Last year, the Red Storm took fifth in the conference tournament.
During the 2010 fall season, freshman Harin Lee emerged as the Red Storm's top golfer with a 77.25 round average. Lee had four top-10 finishes, taking third place in the Yale Women's Fall Intercollegiate, tying for third in the Rutgers Invitational, tying for fifth in the Towson Women's Invitational and tying for 10th in the Sacred Heart Fall Classic. Junior Ellen Oswald recorded the first two top-10s of her career, taking fifth in the Sacred Heart Fall Classic and tying for eighth in the Towson Women's Invitational. Sophomore Mariana Barrios posted the fourth top-10 showing of her career when she tied for eighth in the Towson Women's Invitational.
