QUEENS, N.Y. - After becoming the first St. John's men's tennis player to qualify for the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, junior Vasko Mladenov has been named the October BIG EAST Male Tennis Player of the Month, as announced by the conference office on Wednesday.
Mladenov and the Red Storm recently concluded one of their most successful fall seasons to date, as the University of Texas transfer claimed the ITA Northeast Regional Championship (Oct. 14-18) with six-straight victories to earn the automatic qualifier into the prestigious National Indoor Championship, which will take place from Nov. 3-6 at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
The 32-man singles bracket includes the top 10 ITA ranked players in the country, 13 of the top 15, and the nation's top freshman. In total, 26 of the 32 competitors are ranked in the nation's top 85. Mladenov is the only BIG EAST Conference male representative at the event.
The Red Storm newcomer finished the month of October with a 7-2 record in singles play and a 3-0 mark in doubles play, as he teamed up with classmate Mike Lampa to win the top doubles flight at the Fall Columbia Classic (Oct. 7-9). Mladenov's fall singles record now sits at 13-3, with an 8-2 overall mark in doubles play entering the event.
The tournament, which features a 32-player singles field and 20-team doubles bracket for both men and women, will include 126 players from 30 countries and six continents, 68 Americans, 58 foreign-born players - including Mladenov who hails from Bulgaria - while representing a total of 54 schools from 27 states.
Mladenov will take on nationally-ranked Kevin King of Georgia Tech on Thursday, Nov. 3 at 1 p.m., with a potential second round matchup against the nation's No. 1 player, Alex Domijan from the University of Virginia. Admission for the event is free for all fans.
