St. John's Track & Field Announces 2011-12 Schedule

St. John's head track & field coach Jim Hurt has released the schedule for the 2011-12 indoor and outdoor seasons, which includes 26 separate meets with stops in 11 states and Puerto Rico.
"We are fortunate to be able to contest a schedule that enables our student-athletes to compete across the country at the best competitions and venues offered in collegiate track & field," said Hurt. "The schedule allows our team to test themselves at the highest levels of the sport and develop their talents to the fullest potential."
The 2011-12 indoor season begins with three New York based meets during the month of December. On Thursday, Dec. 1, the Red Storm will compete at the Manhattan College Multi-Event in Riverdale, N.Y. The following Thursday, Dec. 8, St. John's track & field will host the Bill Ward Invitational for the second straight year at St. Anthony's High School in South Huntington, N.Y. That Friday, Dec. 9, a portion of the squad will also compete at the Fordham Lid-Lifter held at the Bronx, N.Y. campus.
The month of January brings another three meets for the St. John's track & field program starting with the Princeton Quad Meet on Saturday, Jan. 14, in Princeton, N.J. Then the team will return to St. Anthony's High School on Friday, Jan. 20, to compete in the Long Island Championship. The month wraps up for the Red Storm with the prestigious Metropolitan Championship held on Thursday and Friday, Jan. 26-27. The Met Championship is the team's first of four indoor meets at the world class New Balance Armory in Manhattan.
February commences the start of the indoor championship season with St. John's track & field competing in two premier events, the Meyo Invite at the University of Notre Dame and the New Balance Invite at the New York City Armory, from Jan. 3-4. The team will be split once again on Saturday, Jan. 11 between the Millrose Games at the New York City Armory and the St. Valentine's Meet at the Boston University Armory. Then St. John's will look to improve on last year's tenth place finish at the BIG EAST Championships at the New York City Armory on Feb. 18th and 19th. The Red Storm return the BIG EAST 400-meter indoor champion Molly Ellis and fellow 2011 All-BIG EAST performers Nicole Cocozza, Michelle Duffy, Chanel King, and Aryon Trujillo. The final meets of the busy February slate are the USA Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. and an early season outdoor event, the Rossi Relays, in Clermont, Calif. on Feb. 24th and 25th.
The indoor season wraps up in March with two championship level meets for the Red Storm. First the team will compete in the ECAC Championships on March 3rd and 4th at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, Mass. where the team placed 30th out of 50 teams in 2011. The NCAA Championships then take place on March 9th and 10th at Boise State University in Boise, Id.
The outdoor season begins in earnest with a trip to Carolina, Puerto Rico on March 17th for the Puerto Rico Spring Classic. St. John's track & field competes again when it hosts the annual Monday Meeting at DaSilva Field in Queens, N.Y. on April 9th. The Red Storm will then head to Rutgers University on April 13th and 14th for the Metropolitan Championship where it produced a second place overall finish last year thanks to one relay and three individual titles.
The Red Storm stays in the state of New Jersey for the Larry Ellis Invitational on April 20th and 21st at Princeton University. The final weekend of April, the 26th to the 29th, marks St. John's return to the oldest track & field competition in the nation, the Penn Relays, in Philadelphia, Pa. Part of the St. John's roster will also be participating in the Yale Invite in New Haven, Conn. during that weekend.
This year's outdoor BIG EAST Championships will be hosted by the University of South Florida from May 4-6 in Tampa, Fla. After the conference championships, the Red Storm will make another trip to Princeton University for the ECAC Championships from May 11-13. The month of May wraps up for the Red Storm at the NCAA Regional Championships in Jacksonville, Fla. from the 24-26.
The NCAA outdoor track & field season concludes with the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa on June 6-9. The Red Storm will also hope to place student-athletes in both the USA Junior Championships and USA Olympic Trials at the end of the month. The USA Junior Championships will be held at Indiana University on June 15th and 16th. Olympic hopefuls Priscilla Frederick and Ellis will look to compete in the USA Olympic Trials at historic Hayward Field in Eugeone, Ore. from June 21st to July 1st in an effort to represent the United States in London for the 2012 games.
