NEW YORK - Several members of the St. John's track & field team traveled to New York's New Balance Armory for the last time this season as they tried to hit the qualifying marks for the upcoming BIG EAST Indoor Championships in Akron, Ohio.
Running in the NYRR Saturday Night at the Armory III meet, 11 members of the team competed in seven different events.
The night's best performance came from freshman Shayna Presley who won the 500-meter race with a career-best time of 1:16.00. That mark assures her a spot in both the BIG EAST and ECAC Championships.
Redshirt-sophomore Aryon Trujillo just barely missed the BIG EAST qualifier in the 1,000-meters, as her career-best performance of 2:59.82 missed the cut by less than eight-tenths of a second. Freshman Chelsea Trant also compiled a career-best performance in the 3,000-meter run, but her time of 10:25.46 did not make the BIG EAST standard.
The Red Storm posted top 10 finishes in the throwing events as freshman Angela Onye placed ninth (15.77 meters) in the weight throw and classmate Natasha Amazan finished ninth (12.24 meters) in the shot put. Onye had already qualified in both throwing events, but Amazan missed the BIG EAST qualifier by a half-meter, or a little more than a foot and a half.
Freshman Danette Hinton threw 14.71 meters in the weight throw, finishing eleventh, while freshman Gina Frisa tossed the weight 11.79 meters and the shot 9.57 meters.
The Red Storm ran three teammates in the 800-meter race, with sophomore Alexis Bean leading the way with a time of 2:24.13. Freshman Angela Jarvela ran a time of 2:26.39 and Katrina Schaefer finished in 2:36.05.
Junior Samantha Meyerhoff ran in the mile race, but her time of 5:26.68 did not match the BIG EAST qualifying standard.
Next weekend, St. John's will take 15 qualifiers to the BIG EAST Indoor Championships at the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio. Events will start at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19.
