Dan Cremens Named Lowe's Senior CLASS Award Candidate

QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's lacrosse defender Dan Cremens has been named one of 20 candidates for the prestigious Lowe's Senior CLASS Award.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - classroom, character, community and competition.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
The list of 20 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one finalist who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of classroom, character, community and competition.
Cremens maintains a 3.49 GPA in accounting. He is an excellent student who has consistently made the Athletic Director's honor roll and the Tobin School of Business Dean's List. Most recently, Cremens was selected to receive the 2010-11 American Eagle Outfitter BIG EAST Institutional Male Scholar-Athlete Award. Last year, Cremens was inducted into the Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society as well as Omicron Delta Kappa for academic achievement. Cremens has been an Eastern College Athletic Conference and BIG EAST academic all-star every year at St. John's.
In his time at St. John's, Cremens has been a strong example of leadership and high character. He is one of only a handful of student-athletes to be yearly inducted into the prestigious President's Society, which honors students who combine scholarship, integrity and maturity with leadership skills. Cremens has represented the rest of his lacrosse teammates on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee all four years at St. John's. He was also awarded the Student-Athlete Leadership Certificate as an underclassman and upperclassman. In the fall of 2010, Cremens was selected by his teammates and coaches to be one of two captains for the 2011 team.
Cremens is a four-year participant in the school-wide University Service Day, serving in day-long community service projects at various locations in the community, most recently helping to paint the Northside Senior Center in Brooklyn. Last September, Cremens helped organize his entire team to participate in the annual Tunnel to Towers September 11 Memorial Run. He has worked at the St. Nicholas Men's Homeless Shelter cooking and serving food for homeless men in Tolentine Parish. In 2008, Cremens did landscaping for the Floral Park Conservation Society and worked with Jump Start, helping to mentor and tutor pre-school children. He has also participated in Relay for Life and Race for the Cure.
Cremens started every game at close defenseman during his sophomore and junior seasons, while playing in 11 of 14 games during his freshman campaign. Cremens has tallied 73 ground balls and 25 caused turnovers over the course of his career. He set a career high with seven ground balls in St. John's victory against Air Force last season. Cremens was part of a defensive unit that ranked 20th in the country in caused turnovers per game and 29th in ground balls per game in 2010. The unit also ranked 26th in man-down defense.

Cremens will lead the Red Storm into action this Saturday when St. John's opens the 2011 season at Holy Cross. Game time is slated for noon.
