Furman Edges No. 64 St. John's, 4-3

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The No. 64 St. John's men's tennis team was edged by Furman University on Wednesday afternoon by a slim 4-3 margin at the Earle Tennis Center in Charleston, S.C. The Red Storm's match at Coastal Carolina, originally scheduled for Thursday night, was canceled due to inclement weather.
The Red Storm, who just earned its first national ranking in program history (No. 64) on Tuesday, falls to 8-3 with the loss, while the Paladins improve to 2-11 on the season.
Furman took the early lead with two of three doubles matches to go up 1-0 and extended its lead with a victory at No. 1 singles.
Junior Milo Hauk got St. John's on the board with a 6-2, 6-4 win, his fifth-consecutive victory, at No. 3 singles to cut the deficit to 2-1. Sophomore Mike Lampa leveled the match at two with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles.
Freshman Gustav Kallen gave STJ its first lead of the match, 3-2, with his team-best seventh-consecutive victory at No. 4 singles, but Furman clinched the 4-3 win with back-to-back wins at No. 2 and 6 singles.
With Thursday's cancelation at Coastal Carolina, the Red Storm will travel to Tampa, Fla., to play its first BIG EAST Conference match of the season at USF. The match is scheduled for Sunday, March 13 at 10 a.m.
