CITRUS SPRINGS, Fla. - St. John's freshman Harin Lee was the best player at El Diablo Country Club for the third straight day and, with a 3-over 219, she won the EKU El Diablo Intercollegiate individual title on Saturday. The Red Storm women's golf team took third place as four players finished in the top 20.
Lee is the first STJ women's golfer to win an individual championship since Brittany Lambertson won the Roar-ee Invitational on April 7, 2007.
"It was a very successful day for our team," St. John's women's golf coach Ambry Bishop said. "It was a very successful day for our team. Each day our scores went down. A solid week of practice paid off. I was very excited for Harin and her first college tournament win. Harin has worked very hard this offseason and it paid off. Mariana Barrios also had a great round with a career-low 69. I look for us to carry this momentum into next weekend and have a solid tournament."
Lee finished at 73-73-73-219 (+3) to earn a one-stroke victory over Western Kentucky's Kristen Wilkenson. Lee's 39 pars led the 43-player field and her six birdies ranked seventh. She was strong on just about every hole with a 3.08 (+1, tied for second) scoring average on par 3s, a 4.07 (+2, second) average on par 4s and a 5.00 (E, tied for fifth) average on par 5s.
The Red Storm was on fire on Saturday as all five STJ golfers shot in the 70s. The team carded the best round of the tournament with a 10-over 298. St. John's finished with a 322-315-298-935 (+71), finishing just four strokes back of Eastern Kentucky and Florida Atlantic (both had a 67-over 931). EKU won the playoff.
Barrios posted the fifth top-10 finish of her young career. The sophomore enjoyed an amazing 17-stroke improvement, shooting a career-low 3-under 69 in the final round to finish in 10th place at 82-86-69-237 (+21). Barrios had 30 pars for the tournament and her six birdies tied Lee for the team high.
Junior Ellen Oswald took 13th place after shooting 83-78-78-239 (+23). Sophomore Sebin Kim also enjoyed a final-round improvement, finishing tied for 18th at 84-82-78-244 (+28). Freshman Stephanie Eybers finished in 30th at 87-82-79-248 (+32).
The Red Storm next heads to Williamsburg, Va., to compete in the C&F Bank Intercollegiate from March 19-20. The tournament hosted by William & Mary will be held at Ford's Colony Country Club.
