St. John's Captures Four Regional Championships

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - Four St. John's fencers captured NCAA Northeast Regional Championships and ten fencers finished in the top-five at the NCAA Northeast Regionals on Sunday.
In the men's epee, STJ posted a one-two finish, with Nicholas Vomero placing first, followed by defending National Champion Marat Israelian. On the women's side, Alina Ferdman and Zsofia Fath finished second and third, respectively. Ferdman finished the day with a record of 17-6, while Fath went 19-4.
In the saber, the Red Storm swept the top spots on both the men's and women's sides, with Daryl Homer and Dagmara Wozniak each claiming championships. Homer went undefeated until the final round, finishing 22-1 overall, while Wozniak went 9-2 in the final round of competition.
Freshman Eli Schenkel claimed the Regional Championship in the men's foil, posting a record of 20-2. In the women's epee, Irina Koroleva (second) and Evgeniya Kirpicheva (third) both finished with a record of 18-5.
The Red Storm returns to action on March 24 at the 2011 NCAA Championships hosted by Ohio State University. Last season, St. John's finished second at the NCAA Championships. STJ has finished sixth or better at the national championships in each year since 1993. As a team, St. John's has one national championship (2001) and five second-place finishes (1995, 2000, 2002, 2007, 2010).
