Red Storm Ties For Fourth In Caribbean Classic

PONCE, Puerto Rico - Sophomores Peter Ballo and Pat Wilson posted top-10 finishes and the St. John's men's golf team tied for fourth in the Caribbean Classic on Wednesday at Costa Caribe Resort in Ponce, Puerto Rico.
The Red Storm finished at 290-281-291--868 (+4) to tie for fourth with Old Dominion. St. John's second-round, 7-under 281 was the best team round of the tournament. USC Upstate won after playing well each day and carding a 283-282-282--847 (-17) to finish 10 shots ahead of runner-up Johnson & Wales. USC Upstate's Adam Goins was the top individual after shooting 69-68-72--298 (-7).
Ballo tied for fifth place at 70-69-75--214 (-2), marking his second top-10 showing of the year and the third of his St. John's career. It is his highest finish since he tied for second in the 2009 Mission Inn Fall Intercollegiate.
Wilson shot a 4-over 76 in the final round and finished tied for ninth with a 73-66-76--215 (-1). His second-round, 6-under 66 was the best individual round of the tournament. Wilson now has two top-10 showings on the year. His best showing was an eighth-place finish in the Hartford Hawk Invitational this past fall.
Senior Mark Costanza improved off of his second round with a 2-over 74 on Wednesday. Costanza tied for 26th after carding a 70-76-74--220 (+4). Fifth-year senior Evan Beirne shot a 1-over 73 in the final round to finish at 6-over 22 and tie for 31st. Freshman Ryan McCormick tied for 41st with a 78-74-75--227 (+11).
Sophomore Jeremy Quinn tied for 71st after shooting 83-76-92--251 (+35) while compete as an individual.
The Red Storm returns to the continental U.S. for its next tournament, heading west for the second time this spring. From March 21-22, St. John's will compete in the Folino Invitational at Oak Valley Country Club in Irvine, Calif.
