Amber Curry Named To BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll

QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's sophomore Amber Curry was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll as announced by the conference office on Monday.
Curry had an outstanding week and helped the Red Storm (19-24, 6-7 BIG EAST) go 3-1 on the week, sweeping Villanova in a doubleheader on April 14 and splitting a doubleheader against Georgetown on April 17. For the week, Curry hit .571, going 8-of-14 with two home runs, one double, one triple, six RBI, three runs scored, 17 total bases and one walk. She boasted a whopping 1.214 slugging percentage and a .625 on-base percentage. Curry recorded a hit in all four games, extending her hitting streak to 11 games.
The Concord, Calif., native becomes the third St. John's player honored and the team's fourth selection on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll this season, joining Kristi Cady (Feb. 21) and Chrissy Montez (Feb. 28 and March 14). The honor is the second of Curry's career. She was named to the league's weekly honor roll last season when she was recognized for the week ending May 3, 2010, after she hit .353 with three homers, one double, six RBI and five runs.
Curry went 2-of-3 with two RBI and was the hero in St. John's thrilling 2-1, eight-inning win over Villanova in Thursday's first game. Curry provided all the offense St. John's would need with two clutch hits. Down 1-0 in the sixth with two outs and runners on second and third, she ripped an RBI single to let field to tie the game at 1-1. With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Curry singled through the left side to plate Fachon Jones from third base for the game-winning run.
In Thursday's second game, St. John's took a 7-6 win over Villanova in nine frames as Curry went 3-of-5 with one home run, two RBI one triple and two runs scored. After hitting a two-out triple in the first inning, Curry's second hit of the game sparked the Red Storm comeback. Down 6-2 in the third, Curry blasted a one-out, two-RBI homer to center field to bring STJ to within 6-4. Her third hit was a single through the left side in the fifth. After reaching on an error at second in the bottom of the ninth, Curry scored the game-winning run from third base on Myriah Rodgers' single to left field.
Curry went 1-of-3 in St. John's thrilling 8-7 comeback win over Georgetown the first half of a doubleheader on April 17. Curry's hit came in the fourth inning when she hit a single to right on the first pitch she saw.
Curry helped keep St. John's alive in its 10-2, five-inning loss to Georgetown in game two, going 2-of-3 with one homer, one double , two RBI and one run scored. Down 3-0 heading into the fourth, Curry blasted the first pitch she saw to straightaway center field for a leadoff solo home run to bring STJ to within 3-1. In the St. John's fifth, Curry helped the Red Storm draw to within 5-2 when she hit a two-out RBI double to center field, plating Chelsea Durning from second base.
On Curry's 11-game hitting streak, she has been on an absolute tear, batting .559 while going 19-of-34 at the plate. She has three home runs, 13 RBI, four doubles one triple, eight runs, four walks and two stolen bases in that stretch. Curry also has a 1.000 slugging percentage and a .615 on-base percentage during the streak.
St. John's returns to Red Storm Field this week to host a three-game series against BIG EAST rival Pittsburgh. The Red Storm will play the Panthers in a doubleheader on Thursday, April 21, starting at noon. After observing Good Friday, the teams will close out the series with a single game on Saturday, April 23, starting at 11 a.m.
