WEST POINT, N.Y. - The St. John's volleyball team completed its "most productive spring season yet," said head coach Joanne Persico, as the Red Storm swept all four opponents in its final tournament of the spring season at Army last weekend. STJ picked up shutout wins over Temple, Army, Manhattan and BIG EAST rival Rutgers to finish the event as the only undefeated squad.
With the four wins at the tournament, St. John's finishes its 2011 spring season with 9 wins and dropped just two sets in three weekends of action.
The event began with the Red Storm pulling off a tight victory over Temple (25-21, 25-23). Junior Paulina Piegza hit a scorching .600 and .750, respectively, while classmate Darlene Ramdin added a .400 attacking percentage and two service aces against the Owls.
St. John's, who defeated Army 3-2 in the regular season, took both sets over the host institution in its next match. Freshman Kerri Johnson led the way with 10 kills and added a .400 attacking percentage against the Black Knights. Ramdin hit .500 in both sets, while sophomore Gabriela Petkova controlled the tempo on the court as the STJ setter.
Fantastic serving from freshman Taryn Bohan and excellent defensive work from sophomore Ashley Asing led STJ to a 2-0 (25-23, 25-21) win over BIG EAST rival Rutgers in its third match. Junior Jordan Haskins added two key blocks to help lead the Red Storm to victory over the conference foe.
The spring season concluded with a two-set win over local rival Manhattan (25-21, 25-22), as Ramdin hit .500 in the first and a perfect 1.000 percent in the second set to conclude one of St. John's best spring seasons on record.
