QUEENS, N.Y. - A week after tying for fourth in the BIG EAST Men's Golf Championship, St. John's sophomore Peter Ballo was named to the 2011 All-BIG EAST Men's Golf Team, as announced by the conference office on Thursday.
Ballo had an outstanding spring season, leading the Red Storm with a 73.64 round average over five stroke-play events. On the year, he ranked third on the team with a 74.07 round average and posted three top-10 finishes on the year, including two in the spring. Prior to capping his sophomore season with a fourth-place tie in the BIG EAST Men's Golf Championship at Innisbrook Resort & Spa's Copperhead Course (April 17-19), Ballo tied for seventh in the MacDonald Cup (Oct. 2-3), tied for fifth in the Caribbean Classic (March 7-9). His best performance was a 2-under 214 in the Caribbean Classic. Ballo also played well in the BIG EAST Match Play from Feb. 11-12, winning his first match 4&3 and halving each of his next two matches.
Ballo's postseason honors mark the second straight year that St. John's has been represented on the all-conference team. Last season, Mike Ballo Jr. and Evan Beirne were named to the All-BIG EAST Men's Golf Team.
The St. John's men's golf team enjoyed a strong year highlighted by two team tournament wins, one individual title and many outstanding individual performances over the course of a 10-tournament season. The Red Storm won back-to-back team championships in the fall when it captured titles in the Hartford Hawk Invitational (Sept. 27-28) and the MacDonald Cup. The victories marked St. John's first tournament wins since the 2007-2008 season. Beirne won the individual title at the Mission Inn Intercollegiate (Oct. 22-24), marking STJ's first individual crown since 2008.
