Molly Ellis Leads St. John's At Rutgers Invitational

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - St. John's placed athletes among the top five finishers in 12 different events in outdoor track & field action at the Rutgers Invitational on Saturday in Piscataway, N.J.
Sophomore Molly Ellis, the indoor BIG EAST champion in the 400 meters, led the team with a BIG EAST-qualifying time of 56.28 seconds to take first place in that event. She also came in third in the 200 meters with a time of 25.84.
Freshman Corrine Williams took third place in the 100-meter dash with a season-best time of 12.32 seconds, while also taking fourth place behind Ellis in the 200 meters (25.89). Senior Rene Cousins finished fifth in the 100 meters (12.41) and classmate Lauren Wynter took fourth in the 400 meters (57.43).
Red Storm senior Kim Piard barely missed a BIG EAST qualifier in the 800-meter race, placing second with a time of 2:14.51. Senior Sarah Sudbury ran a time of 2:16.99 as she finished fourth behind Piard.
Junior Nicole Cocozza took third place in the 1,500-meter race with a time of 4:46.46, while Michelle Duffy (4:51.90) and Aryon Trujillo (4:52.02) both set career highs, placing seventh and eighth, respectively.
Freshman Chelsea Trant continued the streak of top five finishers in the 3,000 meters, placing fifth with a time of 10:16.50. Junior Samantha Meyerhoff came in eighth (10:37.51) and Trujillo placed ninth (10:39.44).
Freshman Shayna Presley set a new career-best time in the 400-meter hurdles, placing fourth in 1:04.64. Classmate Brittany Petersen took 13th in the event (1:12.06).
In the field events, junior Chanel King put on a strong showing finishing third in the shot put (13.21 meters), third in the hammer throw (44.99 meters) and fourth in the discus (39.01 meters). Freshman Natasha Amazan was seventh in the shot put (12.11 meters) and 13th in the discus (32.02 meters), while Angela Onye placed sixth in the hammer throw (43.99 meters).
Sophomore Adara Simonelli placed fifth in the javelin throw with a distance of 40.09 meters.
Senior Bintou Dibba took fourth in the long jump (5.45 meters) and sophomore Stephanie Barnes placed fifth (5.42 meters). Dibba also took eighth place in the triple jump (9.90 meters).
The Red Storm 4x100- and 4x400-meter relay teams each finished in second place with the former running it in 47.82 seconds and the 4x400-meter team crossing the line in 3:51.47.
St. John's will make the program's only appearance of the season at DaSilva Memorial Track on Monday, April 11, for the St. John's Monday Meeting. All events will begin at 6 p.m.
