Red Storm Wrap Up Play At Columbia Fall Classic

NEW YORK, N.Y.- The St. John's men's tennis team concluded yet another impressive weekend of play this time across the East River at the Columbia Fall Classic where senior Mike Lampa and sophomores Hugo Morth and Mark Mozer each advanced to the semifinals of their respective singles brackets.
Lampa, who last week competed in the finals of both his singles and doubles brackets at the USTA Men's College Invitational, took a pair of two-set victories against Freddy Marcinkowski of Monmouth, 6-4, 6-1, and Kuba Kowalski of Fordham, 6-2, 6-0, before falling to Cornell's Dragos Dima, 6-3, 6-2.
In flight "B" singles action, sophomore Hugo Morth advanced to the semifinals after defeating Will Reznek of Marist, 7-5, 7-5, and Daniel Morgan of Columbia, 7-6, 4-6, 1-0(8). The Poitiers, France native, who was the No. 4 seed in the bracket, went on to lose a hard fought semi against Cornell's Quoc-Daniel Nguyen, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0(8).
Sophomore Mark Mozer, No. 1 seed in flight "C", was victorious against NJIT's Jack Felich, 6-2, 6-2, and Fordham's Max Peara, 6-0, 6-2 until another member of the Big Red edged St. John's and Mozer in the semifinals, 6-4, 6-4.
The duo of Lampa and Morth opened doubles "A" flight action with wins over Ofir Solomon and Dennis Zlobinsky of Fairfield, 9-7, and Emilio Mora and Max Peara of Fordham, 8-6. Senior Valentin Mihai and Mozer also picked up to victories against Lorenzo Rossi and Joris Van Eck of Marist, 8-4, and Bert Vancura and Dragos Ignat of Columbia, 9-7.
The Red Storm's next and final tournament of the fall season will be the USTA/ITA Northeast Regionals held at Yale University in New Haven, Conn.
