Shenneika Smith Named BIG EAST Player of the Week

QUEENS, N.Y. - Senior guard Shenneika Smith was voted the BIG EAST Player of the Week on Monday after averaging 21.0 points per game and 9.5 rebounds per game in a 2-0 week for the nationally-ranked St. John's women's basketball team.
The gaurd totaled seven assists, eight blocks and eight steals in the two games. She had 21 points, eight rebounds, four steals, three blocks and five assists in the Red Storm's, 71-55, victory over Iona on Nov. 21. At Hartford on Nov. 25, Smith had 21 points, shooting 56.0 percent from the field. Smith also added 11 rebounds for her third double-double of the season to go along with four steals and a career-high five blocks in the win.
Through games played on Nov. 25, Smith leads the league in rebounding (11.5 boards per game) and is second in scoring (20.8 points per game).
Against Iona, Smith made her way into St. John's women's basketball's all-time top 10 in both scoring and rebounding. Currently, she is No. 9 all-time in scoring with 1,325 points and No. 10 in rebounding with 633. Smith is two rebounds away from taking over the No. 9 spot.
In addition to BIG EAST rankings in rebounding and scoring, Smith is also No. 1 in the BIG EAST in steals (4.0 per game) and defensive rebounds (9.8 per game). She is also No. 2 in blocks (3.0 per game) and No. 11 in assists (4.0 per game).
The Brooklyn, N.Y. native has been on the conference honor roll seven times over the course of her career, but Monday was the first time she has earned the coveted Player of the Week accolade.
The last time St. John's had a BIG EAST Player of the Week was on Feb. 20, 2012 when Smith's teammate Nadirah McKenith earned the honor. Before that, the Red Storm's last Player of the Week accolade was in 2009, when Monique McLean earned the accolade on Jan. 5.
St. John's also moved up a spot in the latest Associated Press poll release on Monday afternoon. The Red Storm went from No. 18 to No. 17 with 314 points.
