Team Notes
The Highlanders' 13 points were the lowest scored by an opponent this season and the lowest since St. John's held BIG EAST-foe Seton Hall to 12 in the first half on Feb. 4, 2012 in South Orange, N.J. St. John's held Seton Hall to just five field goals in the first half and finished the game holding the Pirates to a record-breaking 25 points on nine field goals.
The Red Storm allowed held NJIT to just six field goals in the first half, the fewest STJ has allowed since holding Cincinnati to 6-for-21 shooting in the first half of St. John's 51-34 win over the Bearcats on Jan. 21, 2012.
St. John's tied a previous season-high of 52 rebounds set against UCF (Nov. 11).
The Red Storm outrebounded NJIT 52-28. The +24 margin is the team's highest of the season.
37 points is the fewest St. John's has allowed this season. The previous low was 46 against Tennessee Tech (Dec. 15).
St. John's outscored NJIT 32-22 in the paint, 18-4 off turnovers, 15-4 on second-chance points, and 8-4 on fast break points.
St. John's took its first lead on two Nadirah McKenith free throws at the 19:02 mark of the first half and maintained the lead for the rest of the game.
Individual Notes
Freshman forward Amber Thompson, who started her third game of the season, scored 14 points and grabbed a season-high 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the season and fourth of her career. Thompson's last double-double occurred last season at Harvard (Dec. 22, 2011) when she scored 13 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.
Senior guard Nadirah McKenith scored 13 points and added eight assists and six rebounds. The game marked the fifth time this season and 57th time in McKenith's career she dished out five or more assists in a game. It was also the seventh time this season and 47th time in her career she scored in double figures.
With her third point of the night, McKenith surpassed Dolores Dixon (1984-1988) to move up to No. 17 on the all-time scoring chart. McKenith's 1,037 career-points are just six shy of tying Dottie Giordano (1974-1978) for 16th all-time.
Rookie guard Aliyyah Handford scored four points and set new career-highs with four steals and seven rebounds. Handford has started five-consecutive games for the Red Storm and is averaging 7.2 ppg and 4.8 rpg over the five-game span.
Rookie forward Sandra Ubobi scored four points and grabbed a career-high nine rebounds in a career-high 21 minutes.
Junior guard Keylantra Langley scored five points, grabbed two rebounds and tied a career-high with two blocked shots. Langley has now blocked two shots four times in her career, previously tying the career-high last season against Providence (Jan. 4, 2011).
