Queens, N.Y. -
St. John's lacrosse will open the 2012 season against the same opponent it has the past four seasons, but a deep, talented roster are ready to set a new tone for this year's campaign. Red Storm lacrosse will take on the Holy Cross Crusaders at DaSilva Memorial Field at 1 p.m. this Saturday afternoon to begin the 23rd season in program history.
St. John's has won the last three meetings with Holy Cross, including last year's 15-7 win in Worcester to begin the 2011 season. Red Storm lacrosse is 9-1 all-time against the Crusaders with the lone loss coming in the 2008 season opener.
After last year's 4-10 finish, head coach Jason Miller will look to build upon the team's experience and work towards a berth in the inaugural BIG EAST Lacrosse Championship. 2012 marks Miller's sixth season at St. John's, and he comes in 3-2 all-time in season openers.
SCOUTING HOLY CROSS
Holy Cross has opened its season the past four years against St. John's, as the Red Storm have taken all but one of the contests. Holy Cross returns 26 letterwinners from last year's squad that went 2-13 overall and 1-5 in the Patriot League.
Jim Morrisey, a former college standout at Syracuse, served as the interim head coach for the final nine games of last season going 2-7 down the stretch. Morrisey will look to lean on the team's ten seniors, who have been through plenty of battles during their careers, to improve upon last season's result.
The Crusaders will look to improve upon last year's scoring struggles that had them ranked 59th in the NCAA at 6.27 goals per game. Holy Cross began building momentum at the end of last season winning two out of its last five games.
