QUEENS, N.Y.--In 2011, St. John's posted the second-best winning percentage in the five-year tenure of head coach Amy Kvilhaug. Now entering year six of the Kvilhaug Era, the Red Storm will look to continue the trend of improvement that has marked its program in an effort to contend for the 2012 BIG EAST Championship.
"Our team is really starting to come together at the right time." Kvilhaug said. "I feel like we are progressing in a very positive direction both on the field and with our team chemistry. In the fall we spent a lot of time implementing our system and improving upon our fundamentals. Over the last 19 practices we have really tightened the focus on execution and concentration at high levels."
The Red Storm will feature a solid core of veterans mixed with young talent. Among those returning for the Red Storm is senior catcher/first baseman Kacee Cox, who missed the entire 2011 season with a wrist injury. In 2010, Cox led the BIG EAST with a .404 average and hit nine home runs en route to earning second team All-BIG EAST and second team NFCA All-Great Lakes Region honors.
In the circle, St. John's will have young but talented hurlers, including sophomore Aleshia Link, who led the team with a 2.55 ERA in 2011. The Johnnies will also feature sophomores Ashley Beza and Myriah Rodgers, as well as freshman Fran Carrullo. Rodgers, who led the team with nine home runs in 2011, will also see significant at-bats and be looked upon to add to the offensive production.
The Red Storm infield will feature athleticism at every position, with seniors Cox, Julia Sanchez and Meghan Gwynn as well as juniors Chrissy Montez and Dominique Marcelino anchoring the lineup. In the outfield, St. John's will be bolstered by four-year starting centerfielder Kristi Cady.
There will also be a group of four freshmen, Erin Burner, MacKenna Neuroth, Ellen Czuba and Zoe Yeung, three sophomores in Kelsey Moyer, Jackie Reed and Michelle Tilson, as well as junior college transfer, junior Summer Comstock to fill out the potent Red Storm lineup. The 2012 squad will feature versatility with nearly every player on the roster having the ability to play multiple positions.
St. John's will open its 2012 schedule at the University of Georgia in the Red and Black Showcase, and will play in a total of five tournaments in the early portion of the schedule before getting into conference play. The Red Storm schedule features 53 games, with 15 games at Red Storm Field, the most since 2010.
