QUEENS, N.Y. -- Coming off of two top-five finishes to start the spring campaign, the St. John's men's golf team will face its toughest test of the year at the Morris Williams Invitational in Austin, Texas. In this year's field will be six teams from the Golfweek/Sagarin Top-50 rankings including host and No. 1 Texas.
"We've got a great field and a tough and challenging course here, so it'll be a good test for us and we're excited to see what we can do," head coach Frank Darby said.
The Red Storm will be led by junior Pat Wilson, who is coming off of his first career victory at the Caribbean Intercollegiate (March 5-7) and was named the BIG EAST Men's Golfer of the Week.
Also traveling for St. John's this week are sophomore Ryan McCormick, senior Mark Costanza, freshman Dylan Crowley and junior Jeremy Quinn. McCormick is second on the team with a 73.65 scoring average, while Costanza tied for the eighth at the Re-Bath Snowman Invitational (Feb. 27-28) for his first top-10 of the year. Quinn and Crowley are also coming off their first top-10 finishes of the year as Quinn placed fifth at the Caribbean Intercollegiate, and Crowley tied for seventh.
In this year's Morris Williams field are St. John's, No. 1 Texas, No. 14 Texas A&M, No. 20 New Mexico, No. 36 TCU, No. 43 Texas Tech, No. 44 North Texas, No. 47 Wake Forest, College of Charleston, UT-Arlington, Utah, and Sam Houston State.
The event will be played at The University of Texas Golf Club, a par-71, 7,412 course. The field will tee off for the first of two rounds on Friday via shotgun start at 9:45 a.m. ET. McCormick and Costanza will start on hole nine in separate groups, Wilson will start on hole 10, while Crowley and Quinn will be in separate groups starting on the 11th tee. Live scoring for all three rounds will be available on Golfstat.com.
This is the 46th year of the Morris Williams Intercollegiate, and event held annually in memory of former UT golf star Morris Williams, Jr., who died in a plane crash while serving in the Air Force in 1953. Former winners of the event include Fred Couples, Ben Crenshaw, Brad Elder, Bob Estes, Justin Leonard, Phil Mickelson and Payne Stewart.
At 8 p.m. ET on Friday and Saturday, The Longhorn Network will air one-hour broadcasts of the event.
