STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The St. John's volleyball team returned to the courts for the start of its spring campaign on Friday evening at local rival Stony Brook, and came away with a 4-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-14, 25-18) sweep of the Seawolves at Pritchard Gymnasium in Stony Brook, N.Y.
Junior setter/libero Gabriela Petkova, who has 17-career double-doubles, notched a match-high 12 digs and 12 assists to go with five service aces to lead the Red Storm with a double-double. Newcomer Milica Krstojevic, a transfer from the University of Oregon, led STJ with 11 kills and recorded a .368 attacking percentage in her first match with the Red Storm. Freshman Ashley Boursiquot added 10 kills and sophomore Kerri Johnson had five put-downs and hit .333 for the match.
The Seawolves jumped out to a commanding 11-3 lead in the opening set, but after a pair of head coach Joanne Persico timeouts, St. John's rallied to take the first set by a 25-17 margin and would not surrender the lead for the rest of the night.
Junior setter Sabina Piegza led the Red and White with 33 assists to go with seven digs, two blocks and an even .800 hitting percentage. Sophomore Yana Vavdiyuk and freshman Aleksandra Wachowicz hit .250 and .375, respectively. Vavdiyuk committed just one error on 24 attacking attempts.
Defensively, the freshman duo of Morgan Thomas and Danielle Brackett were active and solid on the back line, combining for over 20 digs.
The Red Storm continues its spring season in late March with trips to Kutztown on Saturday, March 31, and local rival Hofstra on Saturday, April 21.
