QUEENS, N.Y. (March 26, 2012)-- After two rounds at the Spider Spring Intercollegiate, the St. John's women's golf team finds itself in a familiar spot, atop the leaderboard at Independence Golf Club as the Red Storm holds a seven-stroke lead after the first day of play with rounds of 301 and 305. Sophomore Harin Lee is leading the individual competition with 73(+1) in each of the first two rounds, while junior Jennifer Neville is tied for fourth after shooting 74-77--151(+7).
"We are in a good spot after the first two rounds," head coach Ambry Bishop said. "Our team feels comfortable on this course and we have had some good rounds on it. We have to focus on our team goal of having consistent rounds for tomorrow's play."
All five Red Storm golfers are in the top-25 as sophomore Stephanie Eybers, junior Sebin Kim and senior Ellen Oswald are tied for 25th with two-round totals of 158(+14).
After trailing BIG EAST rival Georgetown by three strokes after the first round, St. John's battled back, shooting eight strokes better than any other team on the second 18 holes to build a seven-stroke lead over the Hoyas heading into Tuesday's final round.
In the fall, St. John's used a nine-stroke comeback in the final round to win the Richmond Spider Invitational on the same course, and is hoping to stay consistent on the par-72 course to take home its second title of the year.
Lee is hoping to claim her second individual title of the year, after opening the 2011-12 season with a victory at the Towson Women's Invitational. Neville is trying to claim her second-straight top-10 finish after tying for sixth at last week's C&F Bank Intercollegiate.
The final round of the Spider Spring Intercollegiate will tee off at 8:30 a.m. via a shotgun start. Neville and Lee will start on the first hole, with Eybers staring on hole two, Kim on the third and Oswald on the fourth.
