Ponce, Puerto Rico -- The St. John's men's golf team played its best round of the 2011-12 season with a three-under 285 in the first round of The Caribbean Intercollegiate, tying Rollins for first place after day one.
Sophomore Ryan McCormick led the way for the host-Johnnies, tying a season-best with a 68(-4), while junior Pat Wilson also shot his best round of the year with a 69(-3).
"The guys played great today, even though there were some windy conditions out there," head coach Frank Darby said. "The winds were 30 to 40 miles per hour, but I was proud of the way our guys came out strong."
McCormick and Wilson were the only players under 70 on the day and sit first and second, respectively. Freshman Mitch Hadfield is tied for 13th with a first-round 73(+1), junior Jeremy Quinn is tied for 23rd after a 75(+3), and senior Mark Costanza shot a 76(+4) to tie for 27th and round out the scoring for the Red Storm. Freshman Dylan Crowley also had a strong day on the course, with a 72(E) in round one to tie for eighth while competing as an individual.
The 285 is the first time in 2011-12 that the Red Storm has gone below par as a team, beating their previous low round of 289 at the Hartford Hawks Invitational (Sept. 27-28) by four strokes.
St. John's will be back on the Costa Caribe Resort course tomorrow for round two as it tries to claim its first title of the season and as all six men's golfer stay in contention for the first STJ individual title since Evan Bierne took home the Mission Inn Intercollegiate title in October of 2010.
