Nationally-Ranked Blue Demons Defeat St. John's, 7-0

STORRS, Conn. - One day after securing its spot in the 2012 BIG EAST Championship field with a 4-3 victory at Connecticut, the St. John's women's tennis team continued its six-match league stretch on Friday afternoon in Storrs, Conn., but was defeated by No. 65 DePaul, 7-0, in a neutral site dual match at the UConn Tennis Courts.
The Red Storm is now 5-11 on the season and 4-3 in league action heading into its final week of the regular season. The 65th-ranked Blue Demons improve to 12-6 overall and 3-1 in BIG EAST play.
DePaul worked quickly in doubles play, earning victories at all three slots to jump out to a 1-0 advantage on the Red and White.
The Blue Demons won five of six singles matchups in straight-sets. Both No. 1 singles player Nevena Selakovic and senior Ece Firat's six-match singles winning streaks were snapped. St. John's senior Joanna Zwirbulis was the only member of the Red Storm to win a set, taking the opening frame at the No. 3 slot by a 6-3 margin. Zwirbulis' opponent Gia McKnight took the match 3-6, 7-6 (2), 10-2 to complete the sweep for the Blue Demons.
St. John's is back in action on Thursday, April 12 when it travels to Villanova, Pa., to take on the Wildcats. The Red Storm will return home on Sunday, April 15 for Senior Day against Fordham at 1 p.m.
