QUEENS, N.Y. - After helping lead St. John's to its first-ever NCAA Super Regional appearance, shortstop Matt Wessinger has earned third team All-America honors as announced by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). The only BIG EAST player selected to one of the three teams, Wessinger gives the Red Storm at least one All-American in each of the last five seasons.
A second team All-BIG EAST selection, Wessinger had a team-best 34 stolen bases, the most for a Red Storm player since 1988, and also led the squad in both batting average (.348) and on-base percentage (.435). The senior also ranked second on the team in doubles (14), RBI (48), runs scored (62) and slugging percentage (.486).
Wessinger, who was selected by the Colorado Rockies in the fifth round (168th overall) of the 2012 MLB Draft, led the team with 26 multi-hit contests and 13 multi-RBI games.
The all-time hit king (278) at St. John's, Wessinger is also the all-time leader in runs (194) and ranks third in both doubles (60) and RBI (173). A three-time NCAA Tournament All-Region selection, Wessinger batted .429 (24-for-56) in 13 NCAA Tournament games in three seasons.
The 2012 St. John's baseball team advanced to its first-ever NCAA Super Regional and won its first NCAA Regional since 1980. The squad also won both the BIG EAST Tournament and regular season crowns in the same season for the first time in program-history and finished 40-23, notching its sixth 40-win season in the past eight years.
