QUEENS, N.Y.- After a spring season in which it achieved the highest national ranking in program history, the St. John's men's tennis team returns to the courts for what promises to be an exciting and challenging fall season.
"We have a new crop of players that need to buy into the success that we had last year," said head coach Eric Rebhuhn. "If they can do that then we can continue to have success for not only the fall season but the spring season as well."
The Red Storm will begin the 2012-13 season tomorrow at the Farnsworth/Princeton Invitational in Princeton, N.J. Sending players to the Farnsworth will be Princeton, Columbia, Wake Forest, Cornell, Penn, Yale, Penn State, Binghamton, Farleigh Dickinson, Boston College, Georgetown, Bucknell and Buffalo. Four of the 13 participating teams finished nationally ranked last season. This will be the first taste of fall competition for senior Valentin Mihai, sophomores Hugo Morth and Mark Mozer and freshman Michael-John Every.
For the USTA Invitational on Sept. 21, the Red Storm will have home court advantage at the National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows where it plays its dual matches. St. John's will remain in New York City for their next tournament when they participate in the Columbia Fall Classic. Senior Mike Lampa claimed both the singles and doubles titles with classmate Vasko Mladenov at last year's Classic.
St. John's concludes the fall season at the USTA/ITA Regional Championships on Oct. 18 in New Haven, C.T on the campus of Yale University. Mladenov brought the singles championship back to Queens last fall by winning six consecutive matches, sparking an impressive 2011-12 spring campaign that saw him claim All-BIG EAST honors and an individual ranking of No. 27 in the nation. In this season's ITA Preseason Men's Singles Rankings, Mladenov is the 38th-ranked player in Division I.
