Red Storm Hosts Iona In Tuesday's Home Opener

QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's basketball squad opens its home slate on Tuesday evening when the Red Storm play host to Iona in a 7 p.m. contest. The game will be carried live on ESPN3. Tickets for Tuesday's game are still available and can be purchased by clicking here.
Red Storm Open Season With OT Thriller
- Sophomores Aliyyah Handford and Ashley Perez recorded their first collegiate double-doubles on their way to career nights as the St. John's women's basketball team notched a thrilling 77-72 overtime victory at Sacred Heart in the Red Storm's season opener on Friday evening. The Red Storm had four student-athletes register double figures to move to 1-0 on the season.
- Keylantra Langley scored eight of her 15 points in the overtime period, including the Red Storm's final five of the contest and the go-ahead layup with 1:11 remaining on the clock to give St. John's a 74-72 advantage it would not relinquish. Langely opened overtime with a 3-pointer to put the Red Storm up, 67-66, and added three free throws in the final 31 seconds to seal the opening-night victory.
St. John's and Iona - The Series
- St. John's holds a 12-2 advantage in the all-time series against Iona. The last result between the two programs was a 71-55 Red Storm victory at Carnesecca Arena on Nov. 21, 2012.
- The Red Storm also leads the home series against the Gaels, 7-1.
Roster Additions
- This past week, the Red Storm welcomed two walk-ons to their roster in freshman guard Cynthia Barboa and junior guard Monica Delgado. Delgado has been a student-manager for the past two seasons.
Scouting Iona
- After a stunning overtime victory against Arizona and a loss to Bowling Green, Iona enters Tuesday's game against St. John's at 1-1, 0-0 MAAC.
- Junior guard Damika Martinez, a unanimous 2013-14 MAAC Preseason Player of the Year selection, had 35 points in the game against the Wildcats and 25 points in the contest against the Falcons.
- Sophomore forward Joy Adams, a Preseason All-MAAC First Team selection, is averaging a double-double this season with 12.0 ppg and 11.0 rpg. Senior Sabrina Jeridore averages 9.0 ppg and 9.0 rpg for the Gaels.
- Iona was picked to finish second in the MAAC Preseason Poll behind Marist.
- A 20-13 record earned the Gaels a spot in the Women's NIT where they fell in the first round to Drexel, 59-50.
Double-Doubles Galore
- In the Red Storm's 77-72 overtime victory against Sacred Heart on Friday night, sophomores Ashley Perez and Aliyyah Handford recorded their first career double-doubles. Handford had 25 points and 13 rebounds while Perez recorded 15 points and 13 boards.
- It was the first time since Nov. 11 of last season, a 72-54 victory over UCF, that St. John's had two or more players record double-doubles. Three players, seniors Shenneika Smith and Nadirah McKenith and junior Briana Brown, earned double-doubles against the Knights in head coach Joe Tartamella's first coaching victory at St. John's.
