QUEENS, N.Y. - Head coach Ed Blankmeyer and the Office of Athletic Development have announced that the eighth annual St. John's Baseball Bullpen Winter Banquet will feature New York Mets All-Star Matt Harvey and be held on Thursday, Jan. 30 at the Metropolitan Club in Manhattan. All proceeds from the event will directly benefit the Red Storm baseball program.
"Our Bullpen Winter Banquet has continued to grow each and every year and we are very excited to have Mets All-Star Matt Harvey as our guest speaker," said Blankmeyer. "It's going to be a great night for our team, our alumni and the entire St. John's baseball family."
The 2013 GIBBY Award winner for Breakout Pitcher of the Year, Harvey earned his first-career All-Star nod last season and became the first Mets pitcher to start the All-Star Game since Dwight Gooden in 1988. The righty ranked third in the Major Leagues last season with a 2.27 ERA and finished the year 9-5 with 191 strikeouts in 178.1 innings of work. Harvey has a 12-10 record to go with a 2.39 ERA and 261 strikeouts in 237.2 innings in two seasons with New York. Drafted by the Mets as the seventh overall selection in the 2010 MLB Draft, Harvey set a franchise-record for strikeouts in a debut with 11 Ks in 5.1 shutout frames against Arizona on July 26, 2012.
The jacket and tie event, which will also honor longtime baseball and Athletics Department supporter Michael P. Stafford (`67Ed., `72L), begins with a 5:30 p.m. cocktail hour prior to a 7 p.m. dinner. Both live and silent auctions will also be held, providing the opportunity to bid on a variety of priceless items.
Tickets for the event are priced at $300 per person and tables of 10 are available for $3,000. Please RSVP by Friday, Jan. 24 to Paul Sclafani at sclafanp@stjohns.edu or 718-990-5539. Contact Sclafani for additional information or to find out about event sponsorship opportunities.
St. John's, which returns 17 letterwinners from last season, opens its 2014 campaign on Feb. 14 at Pepperdine.
