QUEENS, N.Y. -
St. John's attackman Kieran McArdle picked up another preseason honor as the Tewaaraton Foundation has announced his inclusion on the Tewaaraton Watch List that includes the top players across all three divisions of NCAA Lacrosse.
McArdle was a USILA Honorable Mention All-American selection in 2012 after a 60-point season (28 goals and 32 assists). The junior has totaled 108 points in his career and is only nine shy of the program record since reinstatement in 2005. Last season, McArdle was St. John's first All-American selection since the 1986 season and earned All-BIG EAST honors. The preseason accolades continue to roll in for the Ronkonkoma, N.Y. native, as McArdle was named the Preseason BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year.
Each year, the Tewaaraton Award celebrates one of the six tribal nations of the Iroquois Confederacy - the Mohawk, Cayuga, Oneida, Onondaga, Seneca and Tuscarora. While 2013 is The Year of the Mohawk, the men's watch list includes three members of the Onondaga Nation.
The Tewaaraton Award annually honors the top male and top female college lacrosse player in the United States. The selection committees are made up of top collegiate coaches and are appointed annually by The Tewaaraton Foundation. Committees will make additions to these lists as the season progresses and athletes earn a spot along side these elite players. Both lists will be narrowed to 25 men's and women's nominees in late April. In mid-May, five men's and five women's finalists will be announced. These finalists will be invited to Washington, D.C. for the 13th annual Tewaaraton Award Ceremony, May 30 at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian.
In the first game of 2013 against Holy Cross, McArdle posted career-highs in both assists and points which he originally set in last season's meeting with the Crusaders on Feb. 18, 2012. The numbers are also good for the highest tallies since the program was reinstated in 2005, as the junior attackman broke his own records, also established in last year's game against Holy Cross.
McArdle also became just the second player since program reinstatement to reach 100 career points; doing so in just 30 games. The junior now has 52 goals, 56 assists and 108 points for his career. The only other Red Storm player to reach 100 points since 2005 was Tom Michaelsen who amassed 117 points from 2005-2008.
McArdle is tied for eleventh among all active players in career assists and is the only active non-senior with over 50 for his career.
