SAN JOSE, Calif. - Senior captain Chrissy Montez put on a show in front of her hometown fans, going 3-for-6 with an RBI and two runs scored to lead the St. John's softball team to a doubleheader split with San Jose State. The Spartans used strong pitching to take the opening game of the day, 3-1, before the St. John's bats awoke for a 7-3 win in game two.
Erin Burner also went 3-for-6 on the day with a team-leading three RBI while Aleshia Link and Francesca Carrullo shone in the circle, combining for 4.1 innings, allowing no earned runs.
In the second game of the day, SJSU (10-8) would take the early lead on a wild pitch from St. John's starter Ashley Beza, for a 1-0 advantage after the first inning.
The Red Storm (3-6-1) would respond in the top of the second as Dominique Marcelino lead off with a walk. Ellen Czuba would bunt to reach first base, and MacKenna Neuroth would lay down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners. St. John's kept up the pressure as Kelsey Moyer laid down the squeeze bunt as Marcelino came home for the 1-1 tie.
St. John's would take the lead for good in the third as Montez, Burner and Jackie Reed would start the inning with consecutive singles to load the bases. Montez would come home to score after a dropped infield fly for the 2-1 lead. Two batters later, Neuroth would rope a double to the left field wall to bring home two and give STJ a 4-1 lead.
The Spartans would add a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it a 4-3 game, before St. John's put the contest away with a three-run sixth.
With the bases loaded, Burner would drive a double to left to clear the bases and give St. John's a 7-3 lead. Link (1-0, 0.00 ERA) would go 3.2 innings and strike out four to get her first victory of the season.
In the opening game, St. John's took the early lead as Beza would get on base via a one-out error in the top of the first. She would advance to second when Burner laced a single to right field. Two batters later, Montez would hit a two-out double to bring Beza home for the 1-0 Red Storm lead.
The Spartans threatened early to come back and tie the game, but Free and the St. John's defense held SJSU at bay, stranding five runners through the first two frames.
St. John's defense would continue to stifle the Spartans in the fourth inning as SJSU got runners to second and third with two outs, only to have Free turn them away, forcing a pop-out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Spartans would finally get on the board, via a two-run home run from Jessica Garcia. Four batters later, SJSU would get an RBI double by Markesha Collins for the 3-1 final score.
Free (0-4, 2.62 ERA) pitched all six innings for the Red Storm, striking out six to take the loss.
The Red Storm will stay in the Silicon Valley on Monday, taking on the Broncos of Santa Clara at 5 p.m. ET for a single game matchup. Live stats and live chatting will be available through the St. John's Softball Gameday Central page.
