FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. - Despite claiming doubles point and getting two wins from senior Nevena Selakovic and freshman Amber Washington at first and second singles, St. John's could not find a way to top in-state rival Syracuse as the Orange took the match, 4-3, in the Red Storm's final home match of the spring season.
St. John's (7-9, 2-3) jumped out to a 1-0 lead by taking the doubles point. After classmates Selakovic and Ksenia Mikhaylova took their match at second doubles, 8-6, Washington and junior Diamond Adams clinched the point at first singles in a tie break, 8-7(6). The Red Storm has now won doubles point in three of its last four matches.
After the Orange won the fifth and sixth singles matches, Selakovic swung the momentum back to the Red Storm's side with a straight set, 6-2, 6-4, victory at first singles. Washington followed suit with a three-set win at the No. 2 slot to give St. John's its final lead of the match, 3-2.
Syracuse would go on to win the duals at third and fourth singles to clinch the match.
Selakovic has now won three straight and eight out of her last 10. With the 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 win at second singles, Washington has now won three three-set matches this season.
The Red Storm will next travel across the Hudson River to take on Farleigh Dickinson on Thursday, April 11, at 3 p.m.
