Red Storm To Begin 2013 Campaign At Colgate Classic

QUEENS, N.Y. - In the 20th year of the program, St. John's will look to build off of its 20-12 record and BIG EAST Tournament appearance in 2012 with a successful showing in its first matches of the 2013 season this weekend. The Red Storm will play 2012 NCAA Tournament teams Binghamton and Colgate, as well as Central Connecticut.
The season opener starts at 1 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 30 and will be against Binghamton. St. John's plays its second match of the season on the same day, as it will take on Central Connecticut at 4 p.m. Finally, on Saturday, Aug. 31, the Red Storm will take on host school Colgate at 11 a.m.
SCOUTING THE BEARCATS
- The Bearcats won the 2012 America East Championship with a 13-18 overall record and an 8-4 record in America East play.
- Binghamton earned its third-ever NCAA Tournament berth in 2012, and was defeated, 3-0, in the first round by Penn State - a final four squad.
- Head coach Glenn Kiriyama is a three-time America East Coach of the Year winner, with his most recent award coming in 2012.
- Binghamton was voted to place second in the America East preseason poll.
- St. John's is 3-2 all-time against the Bearcats. The two teams last met up on Sept. 16, 2011, and the Red Storm came away with a 3-2 win.
SCOUTING THE BLUE DEMONS
- The Blue Demons were picked to finish third in the Northeast Conference preseason poll.
- Last season, Central Connecticut went 18-13 and was the runner-up in the Northeast Conference Tournament, reaching the finals for the first time since 2003.
- The Blue Devils return 2012 NEC Rookie of the Year and First-Team All-NEC honoree setter Makenna Lommori.
- St. John's is 4-1 all-time against Central Connecticut. The Red Storm's most recent matchup with the Blue Devils came on Aug. 31, 2012. St. John's came away with a 3-1 victory.
SCOUTING THE RAIDERS
- The Raiders were picked to finish third in the Patriot League preseason poll.
- Last season, Colgate went 17-14 and 12-2 in league play to win the Patriot League Championship. It received a berth to the 2012 NCAA Tournament and was defeated, 3-0, by eventual champion Texas.
- Senior setter Kaylee Fifer and senior outside hitter Lindsay Young were named to the preseason All-Patriot League Team.
- St. John's is 5-2 all-time against Colgate. The most recent matchup between the two schools was on Sept. 19, 2009. The Raiders defeated the Red Storm, 3-1.
UP NEXT
St. John's will play in its home opener against Siena on Sept. 2 at 1 p.m. in Taffner Field House. The Red Storm is 9-2 all-time versus the Saints and was victorious in its previous matchup between the two squads. Last season, St. John's opened up its home slate with a 3-0 win over Siena.
