QUEENS, N.Y. - Looking to start his journey towards a PGA Tour Card this fall, recent St. John's graduate Pat Wilson continued to make strides at the amateur level with a win at the 111th Met Amateur Championship on Sunday.
After a 4 and 3 finish in each of the first two rounds of match play, Wilson paired up with Dylan Newman of Bonnie Briar Country Club in the semifinals. All squared up heading to the sixth hole, Wilson took three of the next four holes over Newman as he clinched his way into the finals with a 3 and 2 victory.
The momentum continued to roll for the Panther Valley Country Club representative, who took seven of the first eight holes in the championship against Trevor Randolph of Arcola Country Club.
At the turn, the 40-year old Randolph began to chip away at Wilson's seven hole lead, winning five of the next six holes before Wilson took one back at 17 to hold a three-up lead heading into the afternoon round.
After splitting the first hole in the afternoon round, Wilson began his run by taking seven of the next 13 holes to seal an 8 and 7 final score for the championship title. With the win, Wilson earns a spot at the Met Open Championship to be held at Old Westbury Golf & Country Club later this month.
Wilson's victory makes him the fourth St. John's golfer to win the title and third in the last four years (Ryan McCormick - 2012; Evan Beirne - 2010; Andrew Svoboda - 2004).
"It's awesome. It just goes to show how good the St. John's program is because we have a lot of talent. During the summer we always seem to step up to the plate and play really well," said Wilson.
