PHILADELPHIA, Pa.- Freshman Anna Morozova reached the quarterfinals in the top singles flight at the Cissie Leary Invitational to lead the St. John's women's tennis team for the second consecutive weekend.
The Russian, who went 2-1 at the Columbia Invitational last week, defeated Marcele Rosales of Drexel, 6-0, 6-2, advanced to the Round of 16 after her opponent withdrew and topped Cornell's Ryann Young, 6-3, 6-2, before falling in the quarterfinals.
After receiving a bye in the first round in the top draw, junior Nastya Polyakova knocked off Alicia Doms of Temple, 6-1, 6-2, in the Round of 16. Senior Khrystyna Pavlyuk went as far as Polyakova in Flight B but put up a tough fight in her match in the Round of 16 where she squared off against Joyce Caroline of Princeton. Pavlyuk dropped the first set but came back to take the second, 6-1. It took a 10-point tiebreaker in the third set for Caroline to advance to the quarterfinals.
Senior Yanita Arnaudova won two matches in the Flight A consolation round where she defeated Delaware's Nataliya Naumova, 6-2, 6-0, and Nithila Asokaraj of Rhode Island, 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles action, Arnaudova and Morozova tallied a victory over Kyja Kutnick and Sara Perelman of Cornell, 8-2, for their first doubles win of the season.
St. John's will return to action on Oct. 11 for the USTA Women's College Invitational at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, the home court of the Red Storm.
