PHILADELPHIA, Pa.- Freshman Freddy Ruiz Acevedo, sophomores Erick Reyes and Michael-John Every and senior Gary Kushnirovich each picked up three singles victories to lead the St. John's men's tennis team to the finals of the 16-team Penn Invitational in Philadelphia.
In a hidden duals format, the Red Storm topped St. Joseph's, Buffalo and Penn's second team before falling to host Penn's top squad in the finals, 7-0.
The weekend began with a sweep of St. Joseph's, 7-0, including straight set victories from the top three singles players in the draw, sophomore R.J. Del Nunzio at first singles, Reyes at No. 2 and Kushnirovich at No. 3. The Red Storm then went on to top Penn's second team, 5-2, which started with doubles partners Kushnirovich and sophomore Vaidik Munshaw clinching the doubles point, 6-5, at the No. 2 slot.
On Saturday, Buffalo was the next team to be served a sweep by St. John's before the Red Storm's defeat at the hands of the Quakers on Sunday.
Next weekend, St. John's will travel across the East River to compete in the Columbia Invitational (Oct. 4-6).
