FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's tennis team won its third-straight match on Friday afternoon with a 6-1 win over LIU Brooklyn at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The Red Storm now sits at 4-1 overall on the season and 1-0 in the BIG EAST heading into Sunday's match against Connecticut in Flushing Meadows.
Freshman Anna Morozova took the clincher with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at third singles for her fourth singles win of the season. Morozova also clinched the Red Storm's match against then-undefeated Maryland with a three-set win on Feb. 9. Junior Nastya Polyakova tallied her third-consecutive singles victory with a 6-2, 6-0 win over the Blackbirds' Lisa Maas at the No. 2 slot while seniors Diamond Adams and Yanita Arnaudova each tallied wins in singles play at the bottom half of the lineup to round out the match scoring for SJU.
St. John's is off to its best start since the 2003-04 season when the Red Storm rattled off six-straight victories to begin the campaign before falling to West Virginia, 4-3, on Feb. 20, 2004. The win over LIU Brooklyn marked the Red Storm's third-consecutive win over the Blackbirds spanning the last five seasons.
The Red Storm will be back on the courts on Sunday, Feb. 16 for an 3:45 p.m. match against former BIG EAST rival UConn at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
