QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's tennis program along with four Red Storm tennis student-athletes have been recognized by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) for their academic performances during the 2013-14 academic year. St. John's women's program received All-Academic Team distinction from the ITA while team members Puck Vlaskamp and Yanita Arnaudova, and men's tennis student-athletes Freddy Ruiz Acevedo and Lucas Hejhal were recognized as individuals.
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA member program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above on a 4.00 scale. In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must be a varsity letter winner, have a GPA of at least 3.50 on a 4.00 scale for the current academic year and have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters. A total of BIG EAST Conference nine squads earned the All-Academic Team distinction from the ITA, while 50 student-athletes were named ITA Scholar-Athletes.
The Red Storm women's program finished the 2014 campaign with an 11-9 overall record and a 4-0 mark in the BIG EAST, the program's best conference record since the 2010 campaign. St. John's advanced to the BIG EAST Tournament semifinals last season, the furthest the Red Storm has gone since 2008. Arnaudova marked with her final season at St. John's with a 11-9 singles record, posting the second-most singles victories on the team, while Vlaskamp, a rising sophomore, recorder her first career singles victory on April 17 in a match against Villanova.
Ruiz and Hejhal were both important contributors on St. John's first-ever NCAA Tournament men's team this season, also helping the Red Storm win its first BIG EAST title since 1991 and finish with a 16-8 record. Ruiz posted a 10-9 singles record in his first season with St. John's while Hejhal, a sophomore, finished the season with an 8-11 singles record.
