"We put forth a good team effort tonight to leave here with a draw against a difficult Princeton squad," said head coach Dr. Dave Masur. "I thought we created better chances in this game, but we were a bit unlucky to have one [shot] hit the post and two others get cleared off the line by the defense."
St. John's had the first quality opportunity in the 7th minute as Mohamed Awad chased down a forward pass before firing a shot from just outside the 18-yard box that was saved.
The Red Storm had another good chance in the 9th minute, but a Dela Agbotse shot from inside the 18-yard box was grabbed by Hummel.
Princeton did not register a shot until the 14th minute when Andrew Doar had an off-target attempt. The Tigers used a corner kick in the 17th minute to create their next chance, but a shot from Myles McGinley was stopped by Stagmiller.
St. John's earned its first corner kick in the 28th minute and nearly took advantage. After the ball was sent into the box, Josh Godec flicked a header towards the upper right corner that was cleared off the line by a defender.
The Tigers followed with their best opportunity of the first half in the 29th minute, but a close-range header from Thomas Sanner was sent well over the crossbar and the game remained scoreless at halftime.
The Red Storm continued to create good looks in the second half of action as Gabriel Camara tried to get on the board in the 63rd minute with a 15-yard blast that Hummel deflected out-of-bounds. The ensuing corner kick resulted in a header for Tim Parker that sailed high.
Princeton had the next chance in the 65th minute as a shot from inside the box by Bryan Windsor was blocked.
St. John's then nearly got on the board in the 72nd minute as a 30-yard blast from Daniel Herrera got past Hummel, but went off the right post.
The Red Storm had another near-goal in the 81st minute. With Hummel out of net, Marco Bordon took a touch around a defender and towards the left edge of the box. Bordon then rolled a shot towards net, but a defender kept St. John's off the board with a sliding save and the game remained scoreless at the end of regulation.
St. John's had the first scoring chance in the first overtime as Herrera fired a bending 20-yard rocket in the 92nd minute that Hummel was able to save.
The Red Storm continued to pressure as Agbotse made a run up the left side before firing a shot that Hummel saved out-of-bounds in the 95th minute. The ensuing corner kick set up a point-blank header at the far post for Camara, but the effort went right at Hummel.
Princeton was held without a shot until the 100th minute when Brendan McSherry fired high from the right side of the box and the game went into the second overtime.
The Tigers had a chance for the golden goal in the 102nd minute as Cameron Porter found himself with a clear look from inside the box, but sent a header over the crossbar.
A corner kick created the next chance for St. John's in the 106th minute. The effort was initially cleared before a follow-up attempt from Herrera was saved.
Princeton had one final opportunity to break the deadlock, but Stagmiller stopped a shot from Porter in the 108th minute and the game ended scoreless.
St. John's returns to action on Sept. 13 with a 7:30 p.m. game against Harvard at Belson Stadium.
