QUEENS, N.Y. - An Aidan McDermott sacrifice fly in the eighth inning proved to be the difference as White defeated Red, 4-3, in the opening game of the Intrasquad World Series at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
IWS Player of the Game Jesse Berardi was 1-for-2 with a stolen base and two runs scored for White, while McDermott finished 1-for-2 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Jamie Galazin and Anthony Fava each had an RBI. Joey Christopher started for White and allowed three runs in 6.0 innings of work.
Gavin Garay and Troy Dixon were both 1-for-4 with an RBI for Red, while Michael Donadio finished 1-for-3 with a run scored. Kevin Magee surrendered three runs, one earned, in 5.1 innings of work.
White grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second after McDermott set the table with a leadoff double. Galazin followed with a single and White was in business with runners on the corners and no outs. McDermott then scored when Galazin was caught in a rundown between first and second.
Christopher, meanwhile, kept Red off the board with 1-2-3 frames in the third, fourth and fifth as part of a string of 11-straight batters retired.
An unearned run helped White extend its lead in the bottom of the fifth. Gui Gingras reached on a one-out error before taking second on a passed ball. Fava followed with an RBI double and White led 2-0.
Red, however, used a two-out rally to take the lead with a three-run sixth. A Nick Attardi bunt single led off the inning before Christopher retired the next two batters. Donadio extended the inning with a single before Garay put Red on the board with an RBI single. After Donadio scored on a wild pitch to tie the game, Dixon gave Red a 3-2 lead with an RBI double.
White promptly answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 3-3. Berardi singled before Mark Venice reached on an error and McDermott walked to chase Magee from the ballgame. Cole Whitney walked Galazin to force in a run, but a 4-6-3 double play ended the inning.
Joe Kelly relieved Christopher and tossed 2.0 scoreless innings before White went ahead with a run in the bottom of the eighth on a McDermott sacrifice fly.
Kevin Torres had two strikeouts in a 1-2-3 ninth to close out the ballgame.
