QUEENS, N.Y. - After scoring seven goals in the Red Storm's opening two games of the season, senior co-captain Stefan Diachenko has been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. The attackman earns inclusion in the conference's first weekly awards of the season after earning the first honor roll nod of his career last campaign as a junior.
Making the move to his natural attacking position after primarily operating in midfield in 2014, Diachenko has led St. John's in scoring in each of the first two weeks of the season while posting career-high numbers. The senior has also tallied five groundballs and posted a .467 shooting percentage so far this season.
Diachenko got his last Queens campaign off to a quick start on Feb. 7 by scoring a hat trick in the Red Storm's season-opening 10-8 home loss to Rutgers. The attackman also tallied three groundballs against the Scarlet Knights while posting a .875 shot-on-goal percentage on eight shot attempts.
Most recently, Diachenko scored a career-high four goals to lead St. John's to a 13-8 comeback victory over local rival Stony Brook this past Saturday at DaSilva Memorial Field. The senior needed just seven shots to score his four goals, and he scored a hat trick on three consecutive shots to open the fourth quarter to help the Red Storm pull ahead for good after trailing 3-0 in the first quarter and 7-4 early in the third quarter. St. John's scored the last seven goals and nine of the last 10 in Saturday's non-conference victory over the Seawolves, its third triumph in the last four meetings between the two programs.
Diachenko currently ranks fourth individually in the BIG EAST Conference in goals per game at 3.50 while the Red Storm ranks second as a team at 37 shots per game.
After receiving votes in the preseason edition, St. John's received votes in the Week 1 United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Division I Coaches Poll.
St. John's hits the road for the first time this season on Saturday, Feb. 21, traveling to Jacksonville, Fla. to face non-conference opponent Jacksonville in the program's first-ever contest staged in the state of Florida.
