QUEENS, N.Y. - Following another standout performance at the heart of the Red Storm defense in the team's latest outing at Siena, St. John's senior co-captain Mark DiFrangia has been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. DiFrangia, the first defenseman in program history to be named a unanimous Preseason All-BIG EAST selection, earns his first honor roll selection of the campaign after earning the accolade once before last season as a junior.
DiFrangia caused three turnovers to tie a season-high and added three groundballs this past Saturday in the Red Storm's 8-7 road defeat at the hands of the Saints in Loundonville, N.Y. The Fort Washington, Pa., native saw time on multiple Siena attackers throughout the contest, spearheading a defensive effort which saw St. John's hold the Saints to a .229 team shooting percentage and the hosts commit 12 turnovers. DiFrangia made a number of key late-game plays to keep the Red Storm in contention in Loundonville, including forcing the turnover which led to St. John's final score of the afternoon to cut Siena's lead to a single goal with 23 seconds remaining in regulation.
DiFrangia is currently tied for fifth in the country as well as for the BIG EAST lead in caused turnovers per game at 2.00. The Red Storm co-captain also caused three turnovers to go eight groundballs in St. John's 13-8 home comeback victory over Stony Brook on Feb. 14.
Coming off two consecutive road games, St. John's returns to Queens on Tuesday, March 3, to face No. 6 Yale in a midweek non-conference clash on ESPN3.
