Washington Finishes 14th at USA Fencing Division 1 National Championships

QUEENS, N.Y.- Senior Isis Washington was one of three St. John's fencers to compete this past weekend at the USA Fencing National Championships and March North American Cup in Reno, Nev. Seeded 31st coming into the competition, Washington led the Red Storm with a 14th place finish in Division I women's epee.
Washington posted a 4-2 record in pool play, which tied her for the second-best record in her pool. After pool play, Washington was seeded 15th out of 51 fencers that advanced to the next round. Washington received a bye in the first round, but then went on to defeat Lauren Willock, 15-11, to reach the Table of 16. Washington would then meet the No. 2 seed Isabel Ford. In a close bout, Washington fell 15-13 to Ford, who went on to finish fifth overall.
Joining Washington were teammates Caira Moreira-Brown and Cooper Schumacher. Moreira-Brown finished 23rd overall in Division I women's epee after being seeded 38th. Moreira-Brown had a first round bye after pool play before falling to Katharine Holmes 15-9, in the Table of 32. Schumacher finished with a 4-2 record in pool play in Division I men's epee and was seeded 18th out of 61 fencers that advanced to the next round. Schumacher defeated Aidan Antekeier 15-10, but then narrowly falling to Kevin Mo, 8-7, in the Table of 32 to finish 22nd overall.

St. John's will be back in action at the NCAA Northeast Regional at NYU beginning at 8 a.m. on Sunday, March 8.
