St. John's To Host LIU Brooklyn In Midweek Matchup

QUEENS, N.Y. -- After going 3-1 last week and advancing to the championship match of the Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic, St. John's (8-3) will host LIU Brooklyn (0-7) on Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. in Carnesecca Arena. The Red Storm will look to get back into the win column, while the Blackbirds have yet to record a victory this season.

SCOUTING LIU BROOKLYN (0-7)
LIU Brooklyn won both the Northeast Conference regular-season and tournament titles last season. The Blackbirds have taken home nine of the last 11 league tournament titles.
• Senior Tamara Ignjic leads the team in kills per set (2.87), while classmate Adriana Vinas Joy leads the Blackbirds in digs per set (4.07).
First-year head coach Ken Ko took over the program in April of 2015 after spending the previous five seasons as associate head coach at the University of San Francisco.
• The Blackbirds are averaging 1.60 aces per set and 2.07 blocks per set, which rank second and third in the NEC, respectively.
• St. John's is 11-3 all-time against LIU Brooklyn. The two teams last met three years ago on Sept. 15, 2012, when the Red Storm won in five sets, 3-2.
PALGUTOVA NAMED TO BIG EAST WEEKLY HONOR ROLL
Senior outside hitter Karin Palgutova was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon. In a 3-1 week for the Red Storm (8-3), Palgutova tallied 4.31 kills per set on a .350 attacking percentage.
• Palgutova collected her third and fourth double-doubles of the season with 18 kills and 11 digs against the Patriots, followed by 13 kills and 14 digs against the Blue Devils. She tallied 17 kills on a .538 hitting percentage against the Big Red while also adding eight digs.
•The native of Bratislava, Slovakia also recorded 2.85 digs per set during the week. She held the match lead in kills in all four of the Red Storm victories and currently ranks second in the BIG EAST in kills per set (4.05).
ST. JOHN'S PLACES SECOND IN JACK KAISER VOLLEYBALL CLASSIC
•St. John's (8-3) seven match winning streak was snapped Saturday afternoon after the Red Storm fell to San Francisco (10-0) in straight sets, 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-18) to close out the annual Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic.
•St. John's was led by senior outside hitter Karin Palgutova, who finished with eight kills four digs and two blocks. Her classmate Deniz Mutlugil dished out 23 assists, four digs and a service ace. Both Palgutova and Mutlugil were both named to the All-Tournament Team after leading the Red Storm to the championship match.
Palgutova averaged 4.31 kills per set and 2.85 digs per set over the weekend, while Mutlugil engineered the offense for the Red Storm with 149 assists (11.4) and 28 digs (2.15).
ST. JOHN'S BIG EAST AND NCAA RANKINGS
With a 2.54 blocks per set as a team, St. John's ranks first in the BIG EAST and 45th in the NCAA.
With a .263 hitting percentage as a team, St. John's ranks third in the BIG EAST and 38th in the NCAA.
With 4.05 kills per set, Palgutova ranks second in the BIG EAST and tied for 46th in the NCAA.
With 1.21 blocks per set, Danisha Moss ranks first in the BIG EAST and tied for 76th in the NCAA.
With 1.00 blocks per set, Julia Cast ranks fifth in the BIG EAST.
With a .313 hitting percentage, Julia Cast ranks sixth in the BIG EAST.
With a .301 hitting percentage, Pelin Aroguz is tied for ninth in the BIG EAST.
UP NEXT
The Red Storm head south to Florida to compete against some of the elite teams in the country from Sept. 17-19.
St. John's will first face No. 5 Florida (6-1), who advanced to the 2014 NCAA Regional Final, in Gainesville on Sept. 17. The Gators finished last season ranked No. 6 with a 28-4 record.
•The Red Storm will then make a trip to Tampa to face defending National Champion and top-ranked Penn State (8-0) and Auburn (7-2) in the USF Invitational on Sept. 19, to round out its tournament schedule. The Nittany Lions have won seven national championships, including six of the last eight.
