Karin Palgutova Tabbed BIG EAST Player of the Week

QUEENS, N.Y. - Senior outside hitter Karin Palgutova was named BIG EAST Player of the Week for the second time this season, as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon. In a 2-2 week for the Red Storm, Palgutova racked up 4.11 points and 3.71 kills per set.
The Red Storm began the week with a 3-0 home victory against LIU Brooklyn before traveling to Florida to face three quality opponents, including a pair of top-five teams. St. John's fell in straight sets to No. 5 Florida before facing top-ranked Penn State, who defeated the Red Storm, 3-0.
Palgutova collected her sixth double-double of the season at the USF Invitational against Auburn. She led the Red Storm to a 3-2 victory over the Tigers after registering 26 kills and 18 digs to go along with five blocks. Palgutova was named to the USF Invitational All-Tournament Team after averaging 4.00 kills and 2.62 digs per set.
The native of Bratislava, Slovakia also recorded 2.71 digs per set during the week. She held the match lead in kills in two of the Red Storm victories and currently ranks third in the BIG EAST in kills per set (3.96).
This is Palgutova's fifth-career BIG EAST Player of the Week honor. She was named BIG EAST Player of the Week on Sept. 7 and in consecutive weeks to begin the 2014 season (Sept. 1 and Sept. 8). Palgutova received her first award on Sept. 16, 2013. Last week, Palgutova was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the ninth time in her career.
Palgutova has had an outstanding start to the season as she leads the team in total kills (202), kills per set (3.96), and second in digs per set (2.53). The Slovakian is currently ranked in the top-10 in program history in four categories. Palgutova is all-time leader in kill attempts (4,041), second in kills (1,617), sixth in service aces (118), and ninth in digs (956).
UP NEXT
St. John's will begin BIG EAST play on the road in Indianapolis, Ind., against Butler on Sept. 25 before making the short trip to Cincinnati, Ohio to face Xavier on Sept. 26. The Red Storm ended the 2014 season on the road and fell to both the Musketeers, 3-0, on Nov. 21, 2014 and the Bulldogs, 3-2, on Nov. 22. Butler leads the all-time series 3-1 against the Red Storm and Xavier is 5-0 all-time against St. John's.
