QUEENS, N.Y. - Senior Stephanie Van Pelt was named the ECAC Track & Field Division I Athlete of the Week on Wednesday, as announced by the ECAC's official website. The senior was honored with the award after taking home two first-place finishes last weekend at the Princeton Tri-Meet.
The Staten Island, N.Y., native was the only Red Storm athlete to take home two first-place finishes at Princeton, as she finished first in both the 1,000-meter run and one-mile run. Van Pelt's performance helped secure a second-place team finish for St. John's, which finished just 20 points behind Princeton.
"We are excited to see Stephanie named the ECAC Athlete of the Week as she has worked hard to develop into a top flight middle distance runner. Her winning efforts at the Princeton Tri-Meet were fun to watch and were huge for us in team scoring," said Head Coach Jim Hurt.
Van Pelt, a middle distance specialist, won the one-mile run by recording a new personal-best time of 5:01.71 (4:58.76 converted for track size), roughly three seconds ahead of the second-place finisher and good for the 45th fastest one-mile time in the country. The senior finished the 1000-meter run in a time of 2:56.60.
Van Pelt and the Red Storm return back to the track this Saturday, Jan. 16, as the team travels to the brand new Ocean Breeze Park Track & Field Athletic Complex in Staten Island, N.Y., for the Great Dane Meet hosted by Albany.
