ORLANDO - St. John's men's tennis (3-1) wrapped up a successful week-long, season-opening road trip to the Sunshine State on Tuesday afternoon with a victory over the University of Central Florida, 4-1, at the UCF Tennis Complex in Orlando, Fla.
"This was an incredible trip for our team. We played four tough road matches against quality teams and really tested our guys," said Head Coach Eric Rebhuhn.
Coach Rebhuhn's squad clinched the doubles team point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Roberto Livi and Daniel Skripnik put in a dominating performance against Chris Barrus/Mariano Porter (UCF), winning in straight-sets, 6-0. The No. 49 ranked duo of Lucas Hejhal and Vaidik Munshaw also made quick work of their opponents, grabbing victory from Inaki Espindola/Jack Thiessen (UCF), 6-1.
In singles play, the Red Storm needed only four matches before clinching a team victory over the Golden Knights. After Inaki Espindola (UCF) defeated Livi, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 3 position, St. John's claimed victory at the No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 positions.
Munshaw claimed the first singles victory for St. John's at the No. 4 position handing Mariano Porter (UCF) a loss, 6-4, 6-4. Freshman Andrei Crapcenco followed Munshaw with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Reece Acree (UCF) at the No. 5 position. The No. 56 ranked Hejhal, a senior from Linz, Austria, clinched St. John's third victory on the year with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Chris Barrus (UCF) at the No. 2 position.
"I am proud of how we came together as a team and competed. Our guys were in a lot of pressure situations early in the season and came through with some very impressive wins," said Rebhuhn.
