QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's Head Lacrosse Coach Jason Miller officially announced the 2016 schedule for the Red Storm on Friday. St. John's prepares to take on a tough schedule consisting of 14 regular season games in preparation for the BIG EAST Tournament in May. Six of the team's 14 games will be played at DaSilva Memorial Field on the University's Queens Campus, including three BIG EAST conference matchups.
Coach Miller's squad will face three opponents that participated in the 2015 NCAA Tournament, including defending National Champion and BIG EAST foe Denver. Six 2016 opponents are ranked in the Nike/Lacrosse Magazine Preseason Top-20 Poll, three of which appear in the top-10.
"I think we again have set a very high bar with the schedule, inside the BIG EAST Conference and out," said Miller. "We will face six teams ranked in the preseason top-20, four of them coming from the BIG EAST, and three teams in the top-10 in Denver, Syracuse and Yale."
The first nine matchups on the 2016 slate are non-conference matchups, three of which will be played at home. The BIG EAST regular season schedule spans the final five games of the season for the Red Storm.
"We're excited to be able to keep some traditional and local rivalries in Rutgers, Drexel, Hofstra, Stony Brook and Siena. Those games have become very big for us over the past few years," said Miller. "We were pleased to be able to get Jacksonville to come north, and are looking forward to our first trip to Saint Joseph's."
Coach Miller and his squad open up the season on Saturday, Feb. 13 in Piscataway, N.J., as they travel to Rutgers for the first time since the Scarlet Knights left the BIG EAST conference after the 2013 season. This is the second year in a row that St. John's and Rutgers will open up their seasons against one another and the 24th meeting all-time, more than any other single opponent in program history.
St. John's home-opener is set for Thursday, Feb. 18 when Jacksonville travels to Queens. This is the second meeting between the two teams with Jacksonville capturing a 12-11 overtime victory in the inaugural matchup last season. Jacksonville remains the lone Division I lacrosse team in the state of Florida and is coming off a 4-8 campaign in 2015.
To round out the month of February the Red Storm will hit the road again, travelling to Stony Brook on Sun., Feb. 21. The Seawolves come off a 13-5 campaign in which they finished second in the America East Conference. Stony Brook is ranked 19th in the Nike/Lacrosse Magazine Preseason Top-20 Poll. Last season, the Red Storm rallied to a 13-8 victory after trailing the Seawolves by three goals entering the final quarter.
The Johnnies kick off the month of March with their first-ever matchup against Saint Joseph's, the defending regular-season champs of the Northeastern Conference, on Wed., March 2.
After the trip to Philadelphia, St. John's welcomes Siena to DaSilva on Sat., March 5, marking the 21st all-time meeting between the two programs. St. John's currently holds a 17-3 record against the Saints in the all-time series.
Highlighting the Red Storm's 2016 non-conference slate are back-to-back games in March against some of the best lacrosse competition in the country. St. John's travels to preseason eighth-ranked Yale, a 2015 NCAA Lacrosse Tournament team, on Tues., March 8. Yale was bounced in the first round of the 2015 NCAA Tournament by a Maryland squad that advanced to the national title game against Denver.
Last season the Johnnies lost a thrilling overtime game 11-10 against the Bulldogs in blizzard-like conditions. St. John's forced overtime with 26 seconds left in regulation, but was unable to contain the Yale attack that scored promptly at the beginning of the extra period.
On Sat., March 12 the Red Storm travels to Syracuse, N.Y., to take on the preseason fifth-ranked Syracuse Orange in the Carrier Dome. St. John's has not made the trip up north to play the Orange since 2011, despite clashing with Syracuse in each of the last four seasons as the former BIG EAST rivals have met in neutral site showcase games. Last year the Johnnies held a No. 1 ranked Syracuse team scoreless for the first 27:36 of play before the Orange went on to a 14-6 victory.
After taking on the Orange, St. John's will look to make it two-straight against Drexel on Sat., March 19 in Philadelphia. Keeping with the theme of last year's squad, St. John's came from behind over a visiting Drexel squad, and was able to hold on to a 10-9 victory against the Dragons. St. John's held Drexel scoreless over the final 19:40 of regulation.
Rounding out the 2016 non-conference slate for the Red Storm is a matchup against local-rival Hofstra on Sat., March 26 at DaSilva. Last year, the Red Storm and Pride squared off in Hempstead, N.Y., on St. Patrick's Day as Hofstra took a 10-7 victory. St. John's last played Hofstra in Queens in 2014, downing the Pride, 11-10, in overtime.
Coach Miller and his squad open up BIG EAST Conference play on Sat., April 2 at Providence. The Red Storm is undefeated in 15 all-time meetings with the Friars. Last year Stefan Diachenko tied the program's single-game goals record with seven en route to a 17-7 victory over the Friars.
On Sat., April 9 St. John's hosts its BIG EAST home-opener against preseason No. 18 Marquette. The Golden Eagles are one of three BIG EAST teams to be ranked in Nike/Lacrosse Magazine Preseason Top-20 Poll. Last year, St. John's fell, 14-12, at No. 13/12 Marquette despite a late-game rally.
On Sat., April 16, Coach Miller and his squad will travel to Denver, Colo., to take on the defending national champion Denver Pioneers. This will mark the third-ever meeting between the two programs, as the Pioneers joined the BIG EAST for the 2014 season.
The Red Storm returns home for the final two games of the regular season. On Sat., April 23 Villanova comes to town for a BIG EAST matchup. Despite hat tricks from attackmen Eric DeJohn and Diachenko, the Johnnies fell to Villanova by a score of 21-11 in 2015. Villanova holds a slight edge in the all-time series history, 10-7.
St. John's will host Senior Day on Sat., April 30 as the squad takes on Georgetown in its regular-season finale. The Hoyas last travelled to Queens in 2014, a game that saw the Johnnies prevail 15-7.
The BIG EAST Championship is set for May 5-7 in Denver, Colo. St. John's hopes to make more than one trip to the Centennial State in 2016 as it vies for the first conference tournament berth since 2014.
