BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Fueled by freshman Gerald Mackedon's second place showing, the St. John's men's golf team closed out the fall campaign with a fourth place finish at the Lehigh Invitational in Bethlehem, Pa.
Mackedon produced his second-straight top-three result after carding a one-over 145 over two rounds at the Saucon Valley Country Club. Two weeks ago in only his fourth collegiate tournament, the rookie birdied a one-hole playoff to win The Connecticut Cup.
"Over the last few weeks, I have been able to hit a lot of greens and my putter has been working well," said Mackedon. "My last two showings make me want to train even harder this winter as it gives me confidence heading into the spring."
The Red Storm registered a team score of 36-over 612, finishing ahead of Fordham, Monmouth, Siena, Saint Peter's, Lafayette, Iona, Rider and Manhattan in the standings.
Troy Evans posted a five-over 77 final round score to climb six spots on Saturday and finish tied for 14th. The sophomore recorded top-20 results in four of the team's five tournaments, highlighted by a pair of top-10 finishes.
Seung Yub Baek's 12-over 156 put the sophomore in a tie for 26th.
Lehigh took home the team title, while Bucknell and Hofstra rounded out the top-three. Joseph Trim of Fordham finished two strokes better than Mackedon to win medalist honors.
St. John's closes out the fall season on a high note as the team matched its best finish since opening the year with a fourth place showing at the Alex Lagowitz Memorial Invitational.
