St. John's Set to Host Lafayette on Saturday

QUEENS, N.Y. - After a convincing 54-36 win over Albany in its last time out, the St. John's women's basketball team will host Lafayette at Carnesecca Arena Saturday afternoon. The Red Storm's 36 points allowed were the fewest the team has given up since beating Pittsburgh, 61-32, on Jan. 16, 2013.
Saturday's game will be broadcast live on ESPN3 with Mike Watts and Sky Lindsay on the call. The first tip is scheduled for 2 p.m.
NEWS & NOTES
The Red Storm used a balanced scoring attack to come away with an important win. The Johnnies had nine different players score at least two points, led by senior Jade Walker (13 points) and freshman Andrayah Adams (10 points).
For the game, St. John's shot 40.4 percent from the floor (19-for-47) and hit 5-of-10 from deep. Additionally, the Red Storm went 11-for-14 from the free throw line while holding Albany to just four attempts over the course of the game.
Maya Singleton continues to impress off the bench, chipping in nine points and bringing down a season-high seven rebounds against Albany. The junior continues to lead the team in steals after grabbing three more on Wednesday. Singleton now has 13 takeaways on the season.
Aaliyah Lewis continues to showcase her passing skills as the senior dished out eight assists on Wednesday. The Staten Island, N.Y. native leads the team with 5.3 dimes per contest and has racked up 379 career helpers.
• St. John's is in the middle of a three-game homestand that continues on Saturday against Lafayette and wraps up next Wednesday against Rutgers. The Johnnies then hit the road for one game at Fordham before returning home to host Wagner and James Madison before BIG EAST play begins.
SCOUTING LAFAYETTE
Lafayette enters play on Saturday with an overall record of 1-7 and has lost its last seven games after opening the season with a win over LaSalle.
Lafayette is led by Anna Ptasinski, who is averaging 8.9 points in 30.0 minutes per game. Sammy Stipa is the second-leading scorer with 7.6 points per contest and ranks second on the team with 28.6 minutes per game. Stipa is the team's best free throw shooter, making 17 of her 21 attempts this season (81.0 percent).
Olivia Gumbs, a 6-1 freshman from Newark, Del., is the team-leader with 5.9 rebounds per contest. Gumbs has also chipped in 6.3 points per game and is a 60.0-percent free throw shooter (18-for-30).
Through eight games, Lafayette is shooting 33.5 percent from the floor and 23.3 percent from behind the arc. The Leopards are averaging 24.3 turnovers per game and are being out-rebounded by 4.6 boards per contest.
ST. JOHN'S vs. LAFAYETTE -- THE SERIES
Saturday's matchup between St. John's and Lafayette will be the first meeting between the two schools. Overall, the Red Storm is 27-9 all-time against teams in the Patriot League.
